“I Pagliacci” al Teatro Regio di Parma: il noto tenore nel ruolo di Canio

«Il teatro e la vita non son la stessa cosa», canta Canio, presagendo la tragedia con cui termina «Pagliacci» di Leoncavallo. A interpretare il protagonista dell’opera, in scena al Teatro Regio da domenica alle 20, sarà Marcello Giordani, tenore di lunga esperienza la cui carriera internazionale è particolarmente legata al Metropolitan di New York. Giordani ha debuttato il ruolo di Canio nel 2011.

Cosa le ha fatto decidere di mettere in repertorio «Pagliacci»?

«Quest’opera s’inserisce bene nella mia crescita vocale: la voce si sviluppa, a 45-50 anni è naturale spostarsi su una vocalità più verista e drammatica».

La Marcello Giordani Foundation in collaborazione con il Teatro della Fortuna di Fano e la Gerda Lissner Foundation organizza il III Concorso Internazionale di Canto “Marcello Giordani. Il Concorso giunto alla sua seconda edizione ha l’intento di avviare giovani talenti alla carriera del cantante d’opera. In tal senso la MGF ha pensato di organizzare due selezioni, una in suolo americano che si è svolto a Vero Beach, Florida dal 25 al 30 marzo 2013 e una europea che si svolgerà dal 14 al 19 settembre 2013 nel prestigioso teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania.
La prova finale del Concorso (giovedì 19 settembre), in forma di concerto porterà sulla scena i finalisti i quali saranno accompagnati dall’orchestra del Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania.

The Marcello Giordani Foundation Launches Young Talents into Opera

With a gala night in New York, Tenor Marcello Giordani celebrated the birth of the Marcello Giordani Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting emerging opera singers.

“I was born in Augusta, a small Sicilian city, and since I did not have big economic possibilities, it was not easy for me to study and cultivate my talent. My parents made many sacrifices to help and sustain me, so I promised my father that, if one day I should become famous I would help young people to succeed!”

With these words, on May 7, on the occasion of the official launching of the Marcello Giordani Foundation at the New York Athletic Club, the Sicilian tenor explained the reason for this non-profit organization, the intent of which is in fact to assist and support promising young opera singers.

Connecting Past, Present and Future

It is a cool, gray, late spring day as I speak with Marcello Giordani who is at his New York City apartment. He is just finishing up his 2009-10 Metropolitan opera engagement, during which he has sung Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot, Gabriele Adorno in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, and Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca. Although he is in the United States, his heart is in his hometown of Augusta, Sicily, where the sun shines much more often and a gentle breeze warms both head and heart.

In addition to his busy stage career, Giordani has big ideas about giving back to the next generation of singers. Last May he started a foundation to assist young singers in beginning their careers. This new organization is still in the developing stages, but Giordani already has selected his first benefactors. These singers will participate in masterclasses with Giordani, and then the foundation will assist them with whatever they need to be ready to audition for major opera companies.

Marcello Giordani, at present singing a generally highly praised Cavaradossi at the Royal Opera House in London, is the leading exponent of the great Italian and French tenor roles at the Metropolitan Opera, and the man whom James Levine describes as ‘my favorite tenor.’ This prominence has been arrived at after a steady rise to fame: he will celebrate the 25th year of his career in the 2010-11 season.

Chatting over coffee last week I found him refreshingly unegotistical about his status, and full of praise for his colleagues in London and for the production of Tosca – ‘It was really something special last night (the first night) with such a stellar cast, and even though the staging is traditional it is still very dramatic, very respectful of the music and the singers – quite a rare thing nowadays, when directors feel they have to be revolutionary and impose their own ideas, but this one respects the composer above all.

What do you think of when you hear the words “Italian tenor?”

Whatever first comes to mind probably won’t fit Marcello Giordani. The young 37-year-old tenor is currently in the Bay Area rehearsing for his upcoming role in the first opera of the San Francisco Opera’s 2000-2001 season, Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” with Patricia Racette, Elena Zaremba, and Paolo Gavanelli, scheduled for performances on Sept. 9, 13, 17, 19, 22, 28, and Oct. 1. Most local opera aficionados will remember him as the exceptionally fine Fernando in last season’s production of Donizetti’s “La Favorite” and previous local leads in”La Traviata” with Carol Vaness; in “Lucia” with Ruth Ann Swenson; and “La Boheme” with Patricia Racette.

Yes, he is Italian — Sicilian, in fact. But he’s neither short, chubby, nor convinced he’s God’s gift to music or womankind. Rather, he’s surprisingly modest and intent on improving both his voice and his art and he’s been a devoted husband to the love of his life, Wilma, for the past 10 years. He’s also a tireless supporter of aspiring opera talent and has recently established the Michele Guagliardo Fellowship, named to honor his late father, at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.
