Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” at the Wiener Staatsoper

On June 20, 2016, Marcello Giordani will appear on the stage of the Wiener Staatsoper to reprise a role that he has performed in some of the major opera houses of the world: the Chevalier Des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. From his debut in the role in 2000, in Zürich, to his performance at the Metropolitan in January 2008, e more recently in the Teatro Municipal of Sao Paulo in Brazil, his interpretation of the role has been acclaimed by audiences and critics. Of his performance as Manon’s lover at the Metropolitan, the critic of the New York Times wrote: “Here was the real thing, an Italian tenor who sang with ringing power and sweeping fervor.” Sharing the stage with Giordani will be renowned soprano Anna Netrebko in the role of the protagonist, and baritone David Pershall as Lescaut.
