Verdi’s “Aida” at the Metropolitan Opera

On October 30, 2014, Marcello Giordani returns to the Metropolitan Opera to reprise the role of Radames in Sonja Frizell’s spectacular production of Verdi’s Aida which premiered at the Met in January 1988, and has encountered enormous popular and critical acclaim through the years. Because of its spectacular pageantry, Aida has been called “the grandest of grand opera”. But for all its grandiosity, Aida is also an “intimate” love story where the characters’ conflicting passions and emotions play against the broad background of patriotic and religious values.

Giordani made his debut as the Egyptian warrier at the San Francisco Opera in 2010. Since then, he has sung the role at the Metropolitan Opera, the Arena di Verona, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Vienna State Opera. His debut in the role was received enthusiastically by the public and widely acclaimed by the press: “Giordani’s tenor is a searing lirico spinto, delivered with tremendous power and an almost uncontainable energy”, wrote the magazine “The Opera Critic”. His performance at the Lyric Opera two years later was hailed as “thrilling”: “Giordani’s voice soared thrillingly over the massed ensembles of Act 2 and he brought an emotional depth and highly nuanced vocalism to his late scene with Amneris and the final duet.” (Chicago Classical Review)
Giordani’s performances at the Met will stretch over a period of four months, from the end of October 2014 to January 10, 2015. For tickets and additional information go to the Metropolitan Opera Website.
