Puccini’s Tosca at Deutsche Oper Berlin

Puccini’s Tosca is one of the most frequently performed operas. Based on an acclaimed play by Victorien Sardou, it premiered in Paris in 1887 with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role, and encountered immediate success with the public if not with the critics – every critic and opera lover is familiar with the pronouncement of the musicologist Joseph Kerman who called it a” shabby little shocker”.

Although the opera centers on the figure of its heroine, it is also a favorite role for tenors, who bask in the beauty, the lyricism, and the glory of some of Puccini’s most popular and beloved arias.

Marcello has made Cavaradossi one of his signature roles, having sung it in about 40 different productions of the opera in all the major opera houses of the world. His next appearance in the role will be at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on January 18th where he will share the stage with a stellar cast which includes Russian soprano Tatjana Serjan as Tosca and American baritone Thomas Hampson as Scarpia.
