Next on the calendar: Verdi’s AIDA at the Lyric

On January 21st, 2012 Marcello Giordani will reappear on the stage of the Lyric Opera of Chicago to sing the challenging role of Radames, the Egyptian commander in love with Aida, the Ethiopian slave of the Egyptian princess Amneris.

A quote from the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s website summarizes in a brief paragraph the most significant features of Verdi’s masterpiece: “Impassioned arias, surging choruses, and exhilarating orchestral music show us Verdi at the peak of his powers — masterfully balancing pomp and pageantry with a deeply moving personal tragedy.

The challenges of the role for the tenor begin only minutes into the opera with the aria “Celeste Aida” which calls for a “rich, heroic tone” combined with tender lyricism, and culminate in the rousing confrontation with Aida’s rival, Amneris, a confrontation which seals Radames’ tragic fate – a veritable “lightning storm”, as one critic put it.

Of Marcello’s debut performance in the role with the San Francisco Opera in 2010, the online magazine “Musical” wrote: “The puissance of his timbre was often overwhelming and suited to the impetuous Egyptian leader….” and “Lyricopera” declared him “…one of the finest actors [whose] ease on stage and natural reactions made a believable tragic figure in an opera that can have a stiff, pageant-like quality”. Commenting on his commanding stage presence, the critic of “The Reporter” commented: “He definitely looks the part, a sort of latter-day Victor Mature”.
